Your Junior Year Checklist

Junior Year: Exploration & Preparation

Junior year is one of the most important stages in the college planning process. During this time, students begin exploring potential colleges and preparing the academic and personal foundation needed for strong applications.

The College Connection helps students and families focus on key steps including:

  • Evaluating academic progress and GPA
  • Identifying colleges that align with a student’s goals and interests
  • Coordinating and attending college campus visits
  • Meeting with admissions staff, professors, and financial aid representatives
  • Beginning scholarship research and preparation
  • Building a strong resume of activities and achievements

By the end of junior year, students should have a clear understanding of the colleges they are most interested in and a plan for completing the application process. The College Connection has developed the following checklist of key questions for High School Juniors:

  • What classes should I take?

Review your classes to ensure that you are taking classes that will fulfill graduation requirements and strengthen college applications. Consider advanced classes if you're eligible.

  • How often should I communicate with counselors?

Regular communication with your Admissions and Guidance Counselors is key. They can provide valuable insights and help you stay on track.
  • How can I monitor my GPA?

Keep a close eye on your GPA, especially if it's borderline. Look for opportunities for extra credit to improve your grades.
  • Why are college visits important?

Visiting colleges helps you understand the campus environment and culture. Report your findings to your School guidance Counselor for further recommendations.

  • Should I meet with College Personnel?

Yes, plan to engage with Admissions officers, Counselors, and Professors during college visits. Schedule visits to meet with them.

  • What should I include in my resume?

Update your resume with activities and accomplishments from your junior year. This will be helpful for college applications.
  • Check High School Credits

By the end of junior year, students should have all credits in place for graduation.

  • When should I tentatively make a college decision?

Aim to have a tentative college decision made by the end of junior year.

  • Should I be researching scholarships now?

Yes. Begin researching and preparing applications for college scholarships; involve parents in the process.

  • How do I plan for senior year courses?

Prepare for senior year courses, including any advanced college-level courses if eligible. If you are able to sign up for any college level course, it is recommended.
